Release Editor

The Release Editor is where you prepare and manage all metadata for your single, EP, or album before distribution.

Written by Lisa Smith

Here you define how your release will appear across streaming platforms, social channels, and music recognition services.

Most fields are optional. To keep things efficient, we automatically prefill sensible defaults wherever possible. You can always review or override these if you want full control.

This guide explains every section of the Release Editor so you know exactly what to enter — and what to leave empty.

Release details

Release title

This field contains the official title of your single, EP, or album as it will appear in stores.

  • Enter only the release title

  • Use the exact spelling you want shown everywhere

Example

  • Album title: Music To Dance To

  • Enter: Music To Dance To

Please note

  • Don’t include artist names

  • Don’t include versions such as “Remix” or “Live”

  • Don’t add extra descriptions or symbols
Those details belong in separate fields.

Release version

Use this field only if the release is a specific version of the original recording.

  • Common use cases: remix, acoustic version, live recording

  • Leave empty for original releases

Example

  • Displayed title: Great Song (Jean Paul Remix)

  • Enter in version field: Jean Paul Remix

This keeps store listings clean and correctly structured.

Release genres

Genres help stores categorize your music and improve discoverability.

  • Primary genre

    • Required

    • Must be supported by all platforms

  • Secondary genre (optional)

    • Use for more specific subgenres

Example

  • Primary genre: Rock

  • Secondary genre: Punk

Choose the genres that best represent the sound of your release.

Artwork

Upload the cover artwork that represents your release visually across all platforms.

Technical requirements

  • Minimum size: 1400 × 1400 px

  • Maximum size: 6000 × 6000 px

  • Maximum file size: 20 MB

Best practices

  • Upload the highest resolution available

  • Avoid blurry or compressed images

Restrictions

  • No social media handles

  • No store or platform logos

  • If text appears on the artwork, it must exactly match your release metadata

Artists

Here you define how the artist credit will appear on your release.

You can assign:

  • Primary artist(s) – main credited artists

  • Featuring artist(s) – additional artists on the release

Example

  • Displayed as: Jean Paul & Nadine ft. Lilo

    • Jean Paul → Primary

    • Nadine → Primary

    • Lilo → Featuring

Important

  • Use consistent spelling and capitalization across releases

  • Don’t add descriptions or affiliations

  • Don’t combine multiple artists into one field

Optional release information

This section contains optional metadata. You don’t need to fill this in unless you want to customize or override default values.

UPC / EAN

Each release requires a unique barcode (UPC or EAN).

  • Leave empty to have one generated automatically

  • Enter your own code if you already have one

This code ensures your release is correctly identified and royalties are properly tracked.

Label name

Use this field if the release is published under a label name.

  • Optional

  • If left empty, the primary artist name will be used as the label

Catalogue number

An optional internal reference used by labels and artists.

  • Often used for administrative or archival purposes

  • Format is entirely up to you

Example

  • Label: Great Records

  • Catalogue numbers: GR001, GR002, etc.

Recording location

Enter the city and country where the music was recorded.

  • Don’t include studio names or addresses

Example

  • Amsterdam, The Netherlands

This information can help with correct royalty reporting via performance rights organisations (PROs).

Original release date

Use this only if the music has been released before.

  • New release → leave empty

  • Previously released or migrated content → enter the original date

This ensures your release appears correctly in artist discographies and timelines.

(C) Copyright

Enter the copyright holder or representative for the composition.

  • Usually your own name or your publisher’s name

  • Should match what’s registered with your PRO

This helps with accurate rights matching and reporting.

(P) Master owner

Defines who owns the master recording.

  • Default: label name

  • If no label is set: artist name

This credit is shown on platforms such as Spotify and Apple Music.

Tracklist

In this section you add your tracks, set their order, and manage track-specific metadata.

Track title

Enter the official title of each individual track.

Example

  • Album: Greatest Hits By Me

  • Track 1: The First Great Hit

Use consistent spelling and capitalization.

Track version

Use this field only if the track has a specific version.

Example

  • Displayed as: Great Track (Yusuf Remix)

  • Enter: Yusuf Remix

Do not include brackets or parentheses.

Master audio

Upload the audio file for each track.

Audio requirements

  • WAV format only

  • Standard: 16-bit / 44.1 kHz

  • Higher-quality WAVs are accepted

We’ll deliver the optimal format to each platform automatically.

Preview start

Set the starting point for preview clips used by platforms like TikTok and Instagram.

  • This determines which part of the track is used for previews

  • Platforms usually respect this setting, though final placement may vary

Lyrics / vocals

Add lyrics if the track contains vocals.

  • Lyrics improve visibility and engagement

  • Delivered to supported platforms where possible

For Spotify and Instagram lyric syncing, we recommend using Musixmatch.

Tracks containing explicit content must be labeled accordingly.

Cover or remix

Indicate whether the track is:

  • A remix

  • A cover of an existing composition

Provide the original artist and track title where applicable.

Contributors

Credit everyone involved in creating the track.

Examples include:

  • Songwriters

  • Composers

  • Producers

At least one full legal name is required per track.

Examples

  • You wrote music and lyrics → role: Music & Lyrics

  • Session musicians → role: Musician

For EPs or albums, you can copy contributor data across tracks.

ISRC

Each track requires a unique ISRC (International Standard Recording Code).

  • Leave empty to auto-generate

  • Enter your own if you already have one

ISRCs must be unique and never reused for different recordings.

Track-level overrides

Optional fields if a track differs from the release-level settings:

  • Track artists

  • Track genres

  • (P) Master owner

  • (C) Copyright

Only use these if needed.

Distribution

Release date

Choose when your release goes live.

Options:

  • As soon as possible

    • Typically live within hours to a few days

  • Scheduled date

    • Must be at least one week in the future

Original release date (distribution)

If the release was previously distributed elsewhere, enable this option and enter the original live date.

This ensures correct chronological placement on artist profiles.

Territories

Choose where your release should be available.

  • Default: Worldwide

  • You can limit availability to specific countries if needed

Platforms

By default, your release is delivered to all supported platforms, including:

  • Streaming services (Spotify, Apple Music, TIDAL, Deezer)

  • Social platforms (Instagram, TikTok, Facebook)

  • Music recognition services (Shazam, Gracenote)

We continuously expand platform support.
